Time to drop the shovel and become an accountant
Being born to Irish immigrants and from a line of 6 generations of bricklayers, helped laid the foundations for the approachable, down to earth nature of Mr Taxman. It was during a labouring stint at the age of 15 that Adrian’s father gave him two options. Get an education or grab the shovel and wheelbarrow from the back of the ute & become the 7th bricklaying generation … it didn’t take long for the accountant to emerge!
Whilst working with his father, Adrian would count the exact number of bricks required for each wall. He would make statements like “Dad I’ve worked out that if you didn’t have so many smoke breaks, you could lay an extra 113 bricks exactly per day”. It was soon after that his father suggested he drop the shovel and become an accountant.

What is a BAS?
ABAS is a form that you fill out between one and twelve times a year, depending on your business size. The ATO uses the information on your BAS to work out your GST refund or bill. It’s also used for business income tax (if you’re in the pay-as-you-go system), employee income tax, fringe benefits tax, luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax, and fuel tax credits.

What’s the difference between an ACN and an ABN?
An Australian Company Number or ACN is the registration number issued to a new company registered in Australia. Only companies are issued with an ACN by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), and they provide a unique identity code for monitoring activities within the structure of the Corporations Law of Australia.
An Australian Business Number or ABN is a unique 11 digit number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to all entities that are in business including sole traders, companies, trusts and partnerships. All businesses irrespective of size or turnover must apply to the ATO to obtain an ABN, and you must display that ABN on all your invoices.
What is the tax amount for a business?
All companies are subject to a federal tax rate of 30% on their taxable income, except for ‘small business’ companies, which are subject to a reduced tax rate of 26% for the current 2020/21 income year, reducing to 25% from the 2021/22 income years (27.5% up to and including the 2019/20 income year). The reduced tax rate applies only to those companies that, together with certain ‘connected’ entities, fall below the aggregated turnover threshold of AUD 50 million (AUD 25 million for the 2017/18 income year).
Do I have to include GST on Invoices?
You only need to register for GST with the Australian taxation office (ATO) if your annual turnover/revenue exceeds $75,000 per annum (or $150,000 per annum for non-profit organisations). Once you are registered for GST, by law you must add 10% GST to all of the tax invoices that you issue to customers.
What is FBT, and how does it affect my business?
If you’re hiring employees in Australia, you might find the tax and employment laws there to be different from your home country. An example of this is the fringe benefits tax (FBT) which is a separate tax paid on benefits provided to employees and their family.
What are Fringe Benefits in Australia?
There is a long list of taxable benefits, and each category has different valuation rules for taxability. Types of fringe benefits subject to tax include:
- Car and parking expenses
- Housing and food
- Loans and debt waivers
There is also a residual category to cover non-listed categories of benefits, so basically any non-business benefits will be taxable.
